Dosimetry

Personal Dosimetry

The Radiation Monitoring Unit at the ICENS is responsible for radiation protection throughout Jamaica. It presently monitors over 750 users of X-rays and other sources of ionising radiation in health and industry, in Jamaica, Barbados and the Turks Islands. The service is based on Thermoluminescence Dosimetry (TLD).

The main instrumentation consists of an automated HARSHAW model 6600 reader with a built in Sr-90 irradiator which is used for calibrating the TLD cards. Closed-loop nitrogen gas flow/temperature controls allow the reader to deliver precise linear- heating profiles, optimised for the dosimeter material used.

Dose Reports

Dose reports for each individual are supplied monthly. Personal data files are archived on computer and each record is updated as new exposure data are generated. Summaries of dose records are supplied at intervals of between 1-3 months, as required by the client. The Individual Lifetime Dose record is maintained on computer for thirty years from inception and is available to the customer on request.
