ICENS maintains computer readable distributed SQL databases as part of its work. The data and
information collected are classified by media type, and evaluated using statistical and GIS techniques. In addition to geochemical data, information including that on climate, geology, geography (including topography), hydrogeochemistry, mineral resources, soil type, land use, and epidemiology are being added to the GIS databases.
A web-based Spatial Information Viewing System (SIVS) provides access to the SQL databases and the GIS. This system combines the different data
sources into a single virtual source so that spatial analysis can be performed without regard to the data storage method. It also allows access to a number of document servers holding information on publications, articles, reports, reference tables, and an image database holding high resolution images including those of remote sensing of various scenes applicable to the research efforts.
Some main features of the system are:
1.Document browsing and searching facilities to locate documents by
- words contained in the document
- relationship of the documents to geographic locations
- inter-relationships among documents
2.Map browsing and searching facilities to locate maps by
- theme of the map (ie element in soil, land-use,
etc.)
- coverage of map in relation to a geographic
area
- relationships between maps and documents
